The hallmark of the Montessori method is the three year cycle in a mixed-age classroom. Through a lifetime of scientific observation, Dr. Montessori noted the many benefits that children receive by remaining in the same classroom for three years. Each year the child takes on a new role in his or her classroom community. The younger children begin by observing the older children. The older children reinforce their own knowledge by mentoring the younger children. Dr. Montessori emphasized the importance of movement as an essential part of the learning process. During the morning work cycle, you will find a "busy hum" of activity in the classroom as the children become absorbed in meaningful work. Walking, carrying, pouring, and conversing with peers are normal activities that aim to develop the whole child. The continual practice of the classroom ground rules, respect for self, for others and for the classroom creates a nurturing and independent community of learners. It is impossible to educate the mind without involving the body. Learning is thinking and movement integrated. - Maria Montessori We offer nurturing half-day or full-day programs. Our Primary program serves children ages three to six years of age, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. We believe children are innately curious, and need a learning environment that cultivates their curiosity. River Room Montessori is focused on creating an environment where curiosity and creativity are the fuel for learning. With purpose and Godly character, we believe our students will grow into their callings and change the world. We help them develop authenticity, honesty, a capacity for hard work, responsibility, kindness, and empathy. We believe in individualized learning. Within a framework of firm guidance, children progress at their own pace. Students learn early how to take responsibility for their own work plan and manage their time effectively. Flexible curriculum enables children to explore their passions and interests independently of their peers. This self-direction develops independence and a passion for learning. Direct personal contact with physical objects and tactile models bring complex math and science concepts to life. Before students ever memorize 3 x 4 = 12, they touch and see 3 rows of 4. The Montessori Method naturally leads the child from concrete experimentation to abstract critical thinking. We believe in lifelong learning and growth. Our learners practice critical thinking, collaboration, and emotional intelligence, as they keep growing into the best version of themselves. Our learners set and meet their own individual learning goals. By taking responsibility, working hard, and leaning into teamwork, they are empowered to be the type of leaders our world needs today and tomorrow. We believe we’re a part of a bigger community, a like-minded group aligned around God’s purposes. We don’t have all the answers, but children, parents, and staff all have important parts to play and we all work closely together.
